National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, Dublin
The 19.5-hectare Botanical Gardens are located on the River Tolka in Glasnevin, about five kilometers northwest of Dublin. Founded in 1795 by the Royal Dublin Society, they now house 20,000 live plants and millions of dried plant specimens from around the world. The horticultural research and training center includes the cultivation of numerous orchids.
The greenhouses and the stand-out “Palm House” are of architectural importance. The wrought-iron structures of the “Curvilinear Range” were designed by the Dublin iron-founder Richard Turner in the late nineteenth century.
